NEW OLEAN SQUIRREL |
Hermie the Squirrel, a beloved display of Seneca Heights' history, was originally showcased in 2009. Sponsored by residents and created by Olean Middle School students, Hermie depicted scenes like the former elementary school and the neighborhood's unique characteristics. Hermie 2.0 was redesigned by Olean High School's Art Club students under the guidance of their art teacher, Kellie O'Brien. The project involved research, sketching, and a spilled paint mishap, but the students supported each other throughout. Wood and O'Brien both expressed gratitude for the community effort that brought Hermie to life, showcasing the students' dedication to preserving Olean's history. |

Hospitals Donate 500 Backpacks to Local Students |
For the fifteenth year in a row, employees of Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH), both Kaleida Health facilities, came together to make sure local children are ready for the school year.
Thanks to their efforts, 500 backpacks filled with essential school supplies were donated to students who might otherwise go without. Each backpack included items like pencils, crayons, glue sticks, rulers, scissors, folders, and more—everything needed for a strong start to the year.
The backpacks were distributed to elementary students across our region, including George G. Blaisdell, School Street, and Bradford Area Christian Academy in Bradford; Smethport Elementary in Pennsylvania; and East View and Washington West in Olean, as well as Cuba-Rushford, Delevan, Friendship, Hinsdale, and Salamanca schools in New York.
This long-standing program highlights the generosity of hospital employees and physician practices, who donated all the supplies to make a real difference for local kids.
