LOCAL NEWS

As fall arrives in the Southern Tier of New York, residents are already speculating about what type of winter is on the horizon.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released their winter outlook for 2025-2026, indicating a warmer-than-average season for most of the Northeast, including New York State.

Southwestern New York can expect fewer prolonged cold snaps and more mixed precipitation near freezing temperatures.

Residents should prepare for above-normal temperatures with occasional cold snaps and the possibility of impactful lake-effect snow events.

Olean City Council President Vernon Robinson Jr. expressed frustration over the misuse of new trash cans along a local trail in a recent Facebook post.

The cans, intended for light use such as pet waste, were quickly filled with household garbage, despite warnings from Robinson.

The post garnered numerous reactions from residents who shared similar disappointment and offered insights into the root causes of the issue.

Overall, the community acknowledged Robinson's efforts to improve the area while emphasizing the importance of civic responsibility and local pride in maintaining public spaces.

In a recent post in the Olean Memories Facebook group, we saw photos of dug up asphalt revealing trolley tracks at the intersection of Pine and North Union streets in Olean.

Back more than 100 years ago, street cars and trolleys gave small towns a direct link to Olean’s shops, factories, and train stations. One could travel to from Shinglehouse or Bolivar and points beyond to Olean or Allegany shortly after the turn of the century.

However, by the 1920s, buses began replacing trolleys, and in 1927, Olean's last streetcars stopped running.

Nonetheless, the legacy of the trolleys remains evident throughout Olean.

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York State has initiated a one-time "inflation refund" program to assist residents dealing with rising costs.

Approximately 8.2 million households statewide will receive checks of up to $400, based on income and filing status.

The checks are expected to arrive in October or November by mail and will not be deposited directly.

Residents in the Southern Tier, including Cattaraugus and Allegany counties, can use the refund for everyday expenses like groceries, gas, or bills.

His commitment has earned him recognition as Allegany County Fireman of the Year in both 2007 and 2014.

LOCAL SPORTS

Allegany-Limestone boys soccer coach Jon Luce achieved his 300th win recently.

Through dedication to the program and the support of players, coaches, and families, Luce said the local soccer powerhouse has maintained its standards and aspirations for a state title.

He credits the players for the program's success and values the collective effort that has shaped Allegany-Limestone's soccer legacy.

Despite the milestone, Luce remains focused on continuous improvement and adapting strategies each season.

Defensive back Ja'Marcus Ingram stopped by Mrs. Wight’s second-grade class at Allegany-Limestone Elementary to share his inspiring children’s book, “The Lil’ Player That Could,” a story all about hard work, perseverance, and believing in yourself.

After reading, Ingram toured the school, visiting all the second-grade classrooms, greeting students with high-fives, fist bumps, and plenty of smiles.
